in2LOL Interviews sjokz

posted by Catterick, 1 year ago
What do Unreal Tournament and League of Legends both have in common? Both have a shock rifle in them. How, you might ask? The answer is actually not what, but who: be Eefje 'sjokz' Depoortere. Fans of the League of Legends eSports scene will recognise her as the talented interviewer giving us insight into the minds of our favourite pro-players. We were curious about the woman behind the questions and recently had the opportunity to ask her a few of our own.

An only child, 'sjokz' was born on the 16th of June, 1987 in the historic city of Bruges, Belgium where she grew up until she moved to the college city Ghent for six years. Her hobbies range from movies, sports, going out for beers and dancing, and of course, gaming. Before League of Legends, she played Unreal Tournament, she even represented her country in competitions. It's from one of the weapons in this game that she derived the name by which we know her now, 'sjokz' being a phonetic way of writing 'shocks' from shock rifle. One of her friends from Unreal Tournament introduced her to League of Legends where she reached 1300 elo in season 2 but unfortunately hasn't had time to play ranked in season 3. Despite her busy schedule, she was able to make time to speak to in2LOL from her home in Germany.

When were you approached by ESL to host the EU LCS?

After I made a (very) short appearance on stream at IEM Cologne doing audience interviews I was approached to interview to work with ESL - So the beginning of december.

You made the decision last March to commit fully to eSports. Does becoming the host of the EU LCS make the hard work and sacrifice all worth it in the end?

Absolutely. I don't think I fully realize that I have accomplished something amazing: I get to combine my hobby and work. I'm not going to lie, the past months have been difficult a lot of the times - people might see me traveling to the US and Korea - which I am extremely thankful for - but once back home it was working waitressing jobs to make ends meet for a long time. I'm very happy that with the help of SK, CSN and now ESL I am able to work on my future.

What does this mean for your future relationship with SK Gaming?

I plan to keep on doing my weekly newsshow for SK - Summoner's Recap - once I get settled in in Cologne: If possible (more a matter of time) I would like to work on other projects with SK too. But of course ESL and LCS get priority.

Aside from hosting on Saturday and Sunday, what will you be doing during the week?

Well the shows are on saturday and sunday, so during the week before that I cooperate with the rest of the team to prepare the shows and features and creating content.

With this full time commitment to Season 3 and ESL, will you still have time for other shows like Whose League is it Anyway and your Summoners Recap?

As said before, I definitely want to keep doing the recap once I get settled in. The same goes for Whose League is it Anyway!

How long will you be with ESL? Is it just for the duration of Season 3 or have they indicated they would like you to host future events?

As for now I am the official host for the LCS shows - no future plans as of this moment.

Was event hosting something you wanted to do, or would you still prefer to concentrate on player interviews?

I have never hosted before so I don't know how much I will like it - but I think - once I get over the nerves!!! :) - I'll enjoy it as much as interviewing. And I can imagine there will be interviews involved in the content I will be creating this season.

You did some work with Cybersports Network, in particular with Rachel Quirico at Lonestar Clash. How much of an influence has she been in your eSports career?

Rachel has been one of the most influential people in my work in eSports. She is so down to earth and chill and so absolutely interested in the games she covers. She has tought me tons from tips for interviewing, which questions to ask, how to deal with being in the public eye, style, ... and aside from that she is just a kick ass person to hang out with and a great friend.

Finally, what game are you most looking forward to on this opening weekend?

One side of me is looking forward to the rivalry between GG and EG, but on the other hand I can't wait to see SK take on Fnatic in 'El Clasico', and next to that I want to see how the 'new blood' like aAa will do: So in short, all of them!!

Agree with both, it won't hurt the eSports scene to see some skilled girls!

Idk if it is copied what she wrote but it should be "taught" in the part about Seltzer. Besides that good interview and I get to know more about her, it'll be nice to see her more frequently. Girls in eSports and everywhere are good ofc they draw attention and no it's not about boobies. Girls are just cool I love how Rachel hosts and hope that Sjokz will be even better ;>
